The trust is dependent on donations, sponsorships and grants for the raptor programme, and has the approval of the New Zealand Department of Conservation to care for sick, injured and orphaned raptors. This includes research into their habits and habitat, captive breeding, public awareness and the rehabilitation of raptors back into the wild.
Already the home of many endagered and injured raptors like the New Zealand Falcon (Karearea), Australasian Harrier (Kahu) and Morepork (Ruru). This tranquil location provides the perfect environment for promoting the healing and breeding of these stately birds of prey.
Currently, Wingspan is home to many birds ranging in health from broken wings, and blindness. Orphaned birds are also taken in and nursed until they can be released back into the wild.
